Purpose: Cortisol Response™ was crafted with essential whole food nutrients and nourishing food concentrates known to help support adrenal gland function, as well as in the production of glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids and androgens. Indication: A nutritional formula targeted at helping to normalize biochemical imbalances, in particular, cortisol (a glucocorticoid) levels, related to alterations in adrenal function. The primary symptoms associated with this sub-clinical condition are anxiety, chronic fatigue, sleep disturbances, suppressed immunity, weight gain, insulin resistance and an array of other clinical conditions. A broad range of underlying symptoms may arise because adrenal hormones exert a profound influence on the body's carbohydrate, protein, and lipid metabolism, immune response, thyroid function, cardiovascular health, and overall resistance to stress. Suggested Use: Take 3 tablets daily, or as needed. Additional supplementation of Adrenal Response™ (as directed), Magnesium (2-3 tablets daily) and/or Zinc™ (1-2 tablets daily) from Innate Response Formulas™ is also highly recommended. Cortisol Response™is free of gluten, dairy, corn, GMO's, preservatives and/or colorants. Since no preservatives are used, store tightly sealed in cool to moderate temperatures to prevent oxidation. Contraindications: Not recommended during pregnancy or breast-feeding. Other recommendations: Avoidance of caffeine and alcohol, establish consistent times for going to and awaking from sleep, daily exposure to direct sunlight, light to moderate daily activity and stress management.

Rationale for Vitamins and Minerals FoodState™ Vitamin C When the body experiences prolonged exposure to external and internal stressors, vitamin C, an essential watersoluble nutrient is readily metabolized and depleted from the adrenal glands where it is stored. It is therefore important to replenish body stores as vitamin C has a vital role in stimulating adrenal function, releasing the stress hormones norepinephrine and epinephrine (adrenaline).

Additional factors, including smoking, poor diet and high alcohol and/or caffeine consumption can further deplete the body of vitamin C.

FoodState™ Vitamin B6 Vitamin B6 influences many body functions, including regulating blood glucose levels, manufacturing hemoglobin and aiding the utilization of protein, carbohydrates and fats. It also aids in the function of the nervous system and is readily used by the adrenal glands in hormone production and secretion. Individuals with irregular cortisol levels, either low or high, often have higher vitamin B6 requirements.

FoodState™ Pantothenate Pantothenate is the bioactive form of vitamin B5 as it is found only in food. The adrenals use this nutrient along with cholesterol and vitamin C to manufacture cortisol and other important hormones. If cortisol production and secretion is lowered, the body's ability to respond to stress will be significantly compromised; if cortisol levels are chronically elevated, the body stores of pantothenate need to replenished to maintain adrenal health and function.

Pantothenate also has an important role in the manufacture of coenzyme A (CoA) and acyl carrier protein (ACP), both critical in lipid and carbohydrate utilization and energy production. Coenzyme A is also known to be helpful to the body in managing stress. Low levels of pantothenate can be characterized by sleep disturbances, headaches, gastrointestinal distress, and fatigue.

FoodState™ Potassium In restoration of the adrenal gland function, a small dose of 10 mg potassium is included to help maintain a healthy sodium/potassium balance in the body. When the adrenal cortex is over-producing cortisol levels, aldosterone, another hormone, is also over produced causing the body to reclaim sodium from the urine in exchange for excreting potassium, resulting in a relatively high sodium and low potassium serum imbalance. The sodium/potassium ratio is intimately linked to adrenal gland function, and the balance between aldosterone (mineralocorticoid) and cortisone (glucocorticoid) secretion. Including high-potassium foods is also helpful in modulating cortisol production. Foods high in potassium include: dulse, kelp, sunflower seeds, almonds, raisin, parsley, avocado and swiss chard.

FoodState™ L-Serine L-serine is known to help restore compromised adrenal function, as well as helping to reduce elevated cortisol levels. L-serine also plays a role in the biosynthesis of several other amino acids and body chemicals vital to health. With glycogenic properties L-serine may also be used as an energy source in hormonal production.

FoodState™ Citrus bioflavonoid Flavonoids work synergistically with vitamin C to enhance antioxidant activity, stabilize cell membrane activity, mediate allergic responses and assist in the function of the immune system. Although not conclusive, flavonoids have been linked to having a role in modulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, particularily in the secretion of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and cortisol.

Rationale for Additional Food Extracts Carob Ceratonia siliqua Also known as St. John's Bread, carob is a legume sweet and alkaline in nature, with a warming energy known to be calming to the nervous system. Carob is also a rich food-source of L-serine, providing additional food factors which enhance the utilization of L-serine included in the formula. Carob is also a good source of B vitamins and potassium, nutrients that support adrenal function.

Lycopene Lycopene, a carotenoid compound, was included in Cortisol Response™ as it is predominately concentrated in the tissues of the prostate gland, adrenal glands, testes and liver and is considered to have a protective role on the health of these tissues. Lycopene from whole tomato extract was selected for this formula.
